The problem with pagination

Let’s say you have a webshop selling all kinds of products, usually there will be pagination so products can be grouped per 12 or more.

The issue here is that you have about the same content on every page, the URL will be the same except of the page?=1 parameter. Last but not least, you will have the same meta title and description.

The solution

As with everything in SEO, there isn’t one simple answer. But this is one that’s proven to work for me so it might as well for you.

  • Use the rel="next" and rel="prev" attributes accordingly
  • Add rel="canonical" to all the other pages
  • Add a canonical link tag which points to a page that’s showing all products. <link rel="canonical" href="https://<your-website-url>/products?d=all" />

This will result in Google knowing all content can actually be found on the d=all page, so it’s using the meta from over there. No duplication

The rel tags let’s Google know there’s pagination, and it should treat these links like it’s pagination.
